Chinese car giant BYD is set to overtake US-based Tesla to become the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles by 2025, according to reports.

BYD sold 2.26 million battery-powered cars in 2025, a 28% increase. Tesla has yet to release official figures, but it is expected to deliver 1.6 million vehicles.

Tesla’s Elon Musk once laughed off BYD’s products, but BYD’s recent success is remarkable. Tesla has been struggling this year amid fierce competition from Chinese EV manufacturers and concerns over Musk’s comments.

However, its stock price has rebounded after it said it would test driverless vehicles.
