WhatsApp is introducing a feature allowing users to chat without disclosing their phone numbers by using unique usernames.

This rollout will occur globally over the next few months, enabling the three billion account holders to reserve usernames within the app, although this remains optional.

Users have the ability to change or delete their usernames anytime, and names are capped at 35 characters, with high-profile names restricted.

WhatsApp’s product head, Alice Newton-Rex, noted this feature enhances user privacy, particularly for group chats.

The process of reserving usernames currently requires the latest app version, and users will receive notifications when the feature becomes active.

Consistency for businesses claiming usernames across Meta platforms like Instagram will also be supported; however, personal username matching will require linking Meta accounts, sharing some data.

Concerns have been voiced regarding potential scams with usernames and general privacy, as experts warn that WhatsApp still collects metadata.

Phone numbers will remain essential for account creation, and there will be no public directory for usernames.

While usernames may enhance privacy, some commentators urge caution regarding WhatsApp’s broader privacy practices.
