More than ten years after the Google Glass concept faltered, Google is re-entering the smart glasses market, scheduled for release in autumn.

The new glasses will include a small camera and speakers, utilizing Google’s AI product, Gemini, for user interaction.

Unveiled at the annual developer conference, the glasses come in designs by Warby Parker and Gentle Monster.

Unlike the 2013 original, which faced significant backlash over privacy and price issues, these glasses aim to facilitate hands-free communication.

They are compatible with Android and iOS devices and designed for private audio assistance rather than visual displays.

Future iterations may incorporate in-lens displays, though those are expected to be released later. Developers are already crafting applications for these display glasses.

In the current landscape, Google’s offerings are comparable to Meta’s smart glasses, which have sold seven million units but also face privacy concerns reminiscent of the original Google Glass.

Other companies, including Snap and Apple, are also developing similar products.

Investor Christine Tsai views Google’s renewed focus on smart glasses favorably, suggesting it could benefit consumers and startups by providing a new platform for services.

Developer Anil Shah recognizes the potential for smart glasses to integrate existing Google services like Maps and Voice, indicating a promising future for the technology.
