Loss of Russian Su-34 Jets Hinders Tactical Aviation in Southern Ukraine

The UK’s Defense Intelligence reports that the loss of three Russian Su-34 fighter jets over southern Ukraine on December 22 has significantly halted Russian tactical aviation in Kherson Oblast.

Russian air power, crucial in attacking Ukraine’s bridgehead on the Dnipro River’s eastern bank, faced a setback due to the lack of air support after the Su-34 losses.

Recent days saw an increase in Russian airstrikes around the bridgehead, though at a reduced level. This highlights Russia’s struggle to establish air superiority in the early stages of the conflict, hindering daily operations.

Ukrainian forces shot down three Su-34s on Dec. 22, contributing to Russia’s total loss of 324 warplanes and helicopters since the invasion’s start. The Ukrainian Armed Forces continue to expand their bridgehead in Kherson Oblast despite conflicting reports from Russian source
