Hundreds of passengers aboard Emirates flight EK24 experienced an 11-hour ordeal after their Edinburgh to Dubai flight was forced to return mid-journey due to safety concerns stemming from a fire at Dubai International Airport, caused by an Iranian drone strike on a fuel tank.

The flight, which took off at 21:26 on Sunday, encountered the issue over Egypt and had to return to Edinburgh as air traffic at Dubai was suspended.

No injuries were reported, and authorities stated that the air traffic halt was a precautionary measure to ensure safety.

Travel journalist Simon Calder commented on the ongoing risks of flying to Dubai, noting its status on the UK Foreign Office’s “No go” list, while highlighting the vulnerability of passengers coming from other regions under non-EU or non-UK carriers.

Emirates confirmed the operational disruption and advised passengers to stay updated on travel advisories as it adjusted its flight schedule.

Edinburgh Airport declined to comment on the situation. The surrounding geopolitical tensions have led to increased drone attacks in the region, raising further concerns for travelers.
