Wattlab, a Dutch innovator in maritime solar technology, has successfully implemented a solar energy system on the ‘MV Vertom Tula,’ a multipurpose cargo vessel owned by Vertom.

This pioneering project marks a significant advancement in sustainable shipping, as the installation of 44 Solar Flatracks on the vessel reduces onboard energy consumption by 20%. With a capacity of 79 kWp, the MV Vertom Tula becomes the first seagoing vessel equipped with such a solar power system, demonstrating the potential for renewable energy in maritime operations.

Vertom operates a diverse fleet of over 100 vessels and is committed to sustainability in its shipping and trading activities. After conducting two pilot projects with Wattlab over three years, Vertom decided to fully integrate the solar technology into its newest vessel.

The quick installation process, utilizing innovative container twist lock fittings, allows for minimal disruption to the vessel’s operations, making it an attractive option for shipowners seeking efficient and adaptable energy solutions.

The successful deployment of the Solar Flatrack system is validated by research from the independent organization TNO, which confirms its effectiveness in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This project not only positions Wattlab as a leader in maritime decarbonization but also sets a precedent for the adoption of scalable solar solutions in the shipping indus
