{"id":47,"date":"2023-12-28T20:31:01","date_gmt":"2023-12-28T15:01:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/?p=47"},"modified":"2023-12-30T01:21:12","modified_gmt":"2023-12-29T19:51:12","slug":"why-are-there-so-many-deepfakes-of-bollywood-actresses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/si\/news\/why-are-there-so-many-deepfakes-of-bollywood-actresses\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are there so many deepfakes of Bollywood actresses?"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/131626819_gettyimages-1246111291.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/131626819_gettyimages-1246111291.jpg.webp 976w, https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/131626819_gettyimages-1246111291.jpg-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.doom-news.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/131626819_gettyimages-1246111291.jpg-768x432.webp 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 976px) 100vw, 976px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 976px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 976\/549;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One Bollywood star is making obscene gestures to the camera, another is posing while scantily clad.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except neither of those things actually happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are the latest in a string of deepfake videos which have gone viral in recent weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rashmika Mandanna, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Alia Bhatt are among the stars who have been targeted by such videos, in which their faces or voices were replaced with someone else&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pictures are often taken from social media profiles and used without consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what is behind the rise in Bollywood deepfakes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-67657873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">How AI may affect India&#8217;s vast film industry<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-67305557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India actress calls out &#8216;scary&#8217; deepfake video<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-politics-67518511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fears UK not ready for deepfake general election<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deepfakes have been around, and have targeted celebrities, for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Hollywood has borne the brunt of it so far,&#8221; AI expert Aarti Samani told the BBC, with actresses such as Natalie Portman and Emma Watson among the high-profile victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But she said recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) have made it even easier to create fake audio and video of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The tools have become so much more sophisticated over the past six months to a year, which explains why we are seeing more of this content in other countries,&#8221; Ms Samani said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Many tools are available now, which allow you to create realistic synthetic images at little or no cost, making it very accessible.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms Samani said India also has some unique factors, including a large young population, heavy use of social media, and &#8220;fascination with Bollywood and obsession with celebrity culture&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;This results in videos spreading quickly, magnifying the problem,&#8221; she added, saying that the motivating factor for creating such videos was twofold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Bollywood celebrity content makes an attractive clickbait, generating large ad revenue. There is also the possibility of selling data of people who engage with the content, unknown to them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Extremely-scary\">&#8216;Extremely scary&#8217;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, fake images are used for pornographic videos, but fake videos can be made of almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, actress Mandanna, 27, had her face morphed on to an Instagram video, featuring another woman in a black bodysuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-india-67305557\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It went viral on social media,<\/a>&nbsp;but a journalist at fact-checking platform Alt News reported that the video was a deepfake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mandanna called the incident &#8220;extremely scary&#8221; and urged people not to share such material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A video of megastar Chopra Jonas also recently went viral.
