Fontaines D.C. have announced the release of their fourth album, Romance, on August 23rd via XL Records. This is their first album for XL since Partisan’s three and also marks their first time working with producer James Ford.

Along with the news, the Irish post-punk has unveiled Starburster, the explosive first single from the album.

Bassist Connor Deegan says, “We’ve always had this idealism and romanticism. Each album goes as far as Doggerel, observing it through the lens of Ireland.

“The second album (A Hero’s Death) is about that separation and the third (Skinty Fia) is about displaced Ireland in the diaspora. Now we’re looking at where to romanticize something else.”

Turning to Katsuhiro Ôtomo’s anime Akira for inspiration, vocalist Grian Chatten says: “I’m fascinated by it – falling in love at the end of the world,” he says. “The album is about protecting that little flame. The bigger Armageddon is, the more precious it is.”

Guitarist Carlos O’Connell adds: “This record is about deciding what fantasy is – the tangible world or where you go in your mind. What represents more reality? It almost feels spiritual to us. “

Most of the songs were written while on tour with Arctic Monkeys last year. You can hear some of that in the first single, “Starburster,” which was inspired by a panic attack Chatton suffered at London’s St. Pancras station.
